Newport Beach liposuction surgeon Daniel Reichner, M.D., a double, board-certified plastic surgeon in Newport Beach performs many cases of liposuction, one of the nation's most frequently done cosmetic plastic surgery.

Dr. Reichner has extensive experience and training in two types of liposuction:

Tumescent liposuction.

In tumescent liposuction, the cosmetic surgeon first injects large amounts of saline and medications to help block pain, swelling and bleeding. The solutions also make it easier to break up and remove fat.

Power-assisted liposuction.

Power-assisted liposuction uses high frequency vibrations to separate fat cells from the surrounding support tissues after the injection of a tumescent fluid. Bleeding, bruising and blood loss are reduced even further. The technique is frequently used on areas of the body where fat removal is difficult like the male chest, the upper abdomen and the upper back.

Liposuction is not a meant to promote normal weight loss but a surgical procedure that removes fat from areas that just will not respond to diet or exercise. A long, thin tube, known as a cannula, is inserted through tiny incisions in the skin to vacuum away fat deposits.

The most commonly liposuctioned areas are the abdomen and flanks, the so-called "love handles." Other commonly done areas are the hips, buttocks and thighs and the arms, face and neck.

The procedure is also popular among patients because it leaves minimal scarring and permanently removes areas which may have been troublesome for years. Those interested in liposuction also may want to look into a tummy tuck .

The time required to complete liposuction may vary considerably depending on how large the area is, how much fat is actually removed, whether a general or a local anesthesia is used and which technique Dr. Reichner uses.
