The evolution of the wrinkle filler has led to an amazingly effective product called Sculptra. But Sculptra is not a wrinkle filler, it’s a volumizer. It replaces the natural volume (fat) loss that occurs as we age – the volume loss that is responsible for the appearance of age.
A facelift will remove excess skin, and to some degree this will lessen the shadow effect, but a facelift will not restore volume. And volume is what makes you look young. So that’s why the introduction of a volumizer such as Sculptra is such an exciting event!

What’s Sculptra made of?
Sculptra is made up of poly L lactic acid (PLLA), a synthetic biodegradable polymer that is both resorbable and bio compatible. PLLA has been widely used for many years in dissolvable sutures so it’s compatibility with the body is proven.
How does Sculptra™ work?
Sculptra is not a wrinkle filler, but a bio activator or “volumizer”. It works by stimulating the body to produce new collagen at the sites of injection, thereby replacing lost volume and contours to restore a fuller, more youthful appearance.
Sculptra does not give results immediately. There is a time factor involved since the true volume effect is created by your own collagen, not the product itself. This collagen replenishment takes place over a period of several months. Patients usually receive more than one injection session to accomplish optimum re-volumization.
Ideal Candidates for Sculptra
Healthy patients ages 25 and above are candidates for a Sculptra treatment session. Sculptra is appropriate for patients who want to restore their facial volume with very natural results. Patients who lost facial volume due to significant weight loss are excellent candidates for Sculptra after they have achieved their ideal body weight.
Preparation
Before the Sculptra procedure, you’ll have to undergo a thorough consultation with Dr. Reichner, who will ask you to provide your complete medical history. Dr. Reichner will assess allergies and any other medical conditions that you have; this will help to determine whether or not you are eligible for Sculptra.
You and Dr. Reichner will discuss your goals for the Sculptra procedure. You can raise any concerns regarding Sculptra. An examination of your facial features will be conducted to help assess the extent of the volume loss. Dr. Reichner will develop the best treatment plan to help restore the volume of your face.
Preparation for a treatment doesn’t involve doing anything out of the ordinary. You may be asked by Dr. Reichner to temporarily avoid taking medications like naproxen, ibuprofen, and aspirin.
The Treatment Session
If you’re an eligible candidate, your first Sculptra treatment will involve Dr. Reichner mapping the injection sites on your skin, followed by cleansing the areas. To prevent discomfort, the doctor will apply a topical anesthetic. Once the areas are numb, the Sculptra injections will be delivered to the targeted sites.
The number of injections will depend on the amount of filler required to restore the original volume for each target area. Once the injections have been delivered, the face will be cleansed.
Sculptra Aftercare
After Sculptra injections, there is no need for downtime or a recovery process. You will be able to perform all regular activities with ease immediately after the treatment is completed. While there may be certain minor side effects of Sculptra such as bruising and swelling, they will subside in a matter of days.
To accelerate the recovery process, you should:
- Massage the injected area five times every day, with each massaging session lasting for five minutes. You can continue this for at least five days or until the minor side effects subside completely.
- Avoid tanning beds and/or excessive exposure to sunlight, since they may prolong minor side effects such as swelling and/or redness. Feel free to resume these activities once the side effects have subsided.
- Occasionally apply a cold pack to the sites of injection during the first 24 hours after the treatment.
For the results of a Sculptra treatment to become visible, you may have to be patient for a few months. Results appear gradually and naturally, and they can last for two years or even longer.
