As a woman ages, her skin loses its elasticity and the shape, size and firmness of her breasts can deteriorate. Pregnancy, breast feeding and weight fluctuation can also cause breasts to sag. Breast lift surgery can reshape and raise the breasts, repositioning the nipple to a perkier, more youthful position.

Breast lift techniques may vary based on the amount of sagging in the breast, but the most common procedure involves an incision around the areola and down the middle of the breast that follows the natural breast contour. This way the breast can be reshaped, the arola made smaller and the nipple placed higher. The incision start out slightly pinker or darker than the surrounding skin, but continues to fade over time. The breast lift will relocate the nipple and areola to a higher position, reposition the breast tissue to a higher level, remove any remaining excess skin from the breast and reshape all remaining skin. Closing of the remaining skin will help to reshape and lift the breast to the higher position.

Often, if a patient desires, breast augmentation accompanies the surgery to bring more shape back to the breasts. If you’re having an implant inserted along with your breast lift, it will be placed in a pocket directly under the breast tissue, or deeper, under the muscle of the chest wall.
